Annual leave calculator

This works out an employee's annual leave the way the employee asks about it. Days a week times the weeks of leave the contract gives is the full-year entitlement, with the UK statutory 5.6 weeks as the floor; pro rata for the months of the leave year employed is what a starter or a leaver gets; and less the days already taken is the balance still to book. Days a week times weeks of leave is the full year

Almost all people classed as workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year (GOV.UK), and a week is however many days that person works, so three days a week is 16.8 days and five is 28. Statutory entitlement is limited to 28 days, which is why a six-day worker's figure does not keep climbing; a contract can give more than the statutory weeks, and the calculator takes whatever the contract says.

Pro rata for the months employed

A starter in the middle of the leave year, or a leaver before the end of it, gets the year's entitlement for the months they are employed, and the calculator shows that figure beside the full year so the employee sees where it came from. Twelve months is the full year; nine months of 16.8 days is 12.6.

Less the days taken is the balance

The pro-rata entitlement less the days already taken this leave year is the balance, the one figure the employee asks for and the one the wall chart has to show. The paid plan keeps it per person and updates it as each approved request is taken.
